This webinar series is brought to you at no charge through the generosity of the Dawn Gideon Foundation. The Dawn Gideon Foundation was founded in 2015 in memory of Dawn M. Gideon, a truly strong, intelligent and creative force in life and in her chosen profession. Dawn dedicated herself to working with struggling healthcare providers and finding creative avenues to success. Honoring the memory of Dawn Gideon, a graduate from a CAHME-accredited program, the University of Pittsburgh, the series serves to advance the quality of graduate healthcare management education by sharing best practices in competency-based education.

WHAT THE SERIES IS ABOUT:

A critical part of accreditation is how well students attain key competencies necessary to lead healthcare organizations. CAHME’s move to a competency based standard began in 2008 and was fully phased in by 2013. The most important characteristic of competency-based education is that it measures learning rather than time. Students progress by demonstrating their competence, proving that they mastered the knowledge and skills (“competencies”) required.

Through site visits, CAHME examined our programs performance and found that many struggle with how to evaluate students in attainment of competencies and how to communicate that information to students. Most programs have difficulty with these standards; of the 62 programs reviewed using the 2013 Criteria for Accreditation only 16 programs measured competency attainment completely and successfully. However, several programs created processes for excelling in those areas.

In keeping with CAHME’s mission, four (4) innovative approaches to competency attainment assessment will be featured in a webinar series in the Fall of 2017.
