Accreditation Actions
Accrediting Agencies recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation are required to notify the public of final accreditation actions and the bases for those actions.
Definitions of Accreditation Decision
Definitions of Accreditation Decisions
Decision | Justification |
Seven Year reaccreditation: |
The site visit report may have included some partially met or not met criteria but it is the professional judgment of the CAHME Board of Directors that the program will easily correct any findings within the two-year progress report timeframe. Only programs up for reaccreditation are eligible for a seven-year term of accreditation. |
Three Year accreditation: | The site visit report included several partially met or not met criteria and it is the professional judgment of the CAHME Board of Directors that correcting the findings within the two-year progress report timeframe will be challenging. All initially accredited programs receive three-year initial accreditation terms. |
Denial of accreditation: | The site visit report includes several partially met or not met criteria and it is the professional judgment of the CAHME Board of Directors that program will not be successful in correcting the findings within the two-year progress report timeframe. |
Probationary accreditation: |
The Board of Directors may consider the following criteria in determining whether to grant Probationary Accreditation or remove accreditation from a program. These factors may also be considered, by the Board of Directors, when deciding whether to remove accreditation following a period of Probationary Accreditation.
|
If a Program, upon being reaccredited or accredited for the first time, is found to have only partially met certain criteria or has not met certain criteria, then that Program has two years to come into compliance with the criteria. The Program is required to file a progress report describing and offering substantiation of how the program was brought into compliance with the criteria one year after the site visit. If it is determined in the Program’s first year progress report that the program is still not in full compliance with the criteria, then the program has the opportunity to file a second year progress report. If the program remains out of compliance with any criteria upon review of the second year report, then the Board may take action to withdraw accreditation.
Programs receiving Initial Accreditation are not eligible to receive a determination of Probationary Accreditation

Healthcare Quality & Safety Certified:
The Purpose of Certification
The CAHME Certification Program (“Certification”) is designed to recognize healthcare quality and safety (“HQS”) programs that meet Certification Requirements and have come together to establish distinct academic accreditation standards for master’s degree programs in HQS (“Program” and “Programs”). Certification is intended to serve as a bridge to accreditation while CAHME finalizes the accreditation process for HQS programs. Thus, Certified status is not permanent, does not indicate an accredited status, and does not guarantee eventual, future accreditation. Additionally, once the accreditation process is finalized and published on the CAHME web site, Programs will no longer be considered for Certification; instead, they must pursue accreditation.
